This year marks the sixth successful edition of the “Briefs” publishing project, organized by Gold Extra under the direction of Georg Hobmeier. “Briefs” is a curated open call for game developers and media artists. Each year, approximately three games are selected and funded. The goal of “Briefs” is to create games or similar projects that can be completed in 3–5 days. The exhibition features a retrospective of the winners from the past five years, and the projects for 2026 will be unveiled at the opening. These can be tried out for three days at the Medienwerkstatt during the ISI Festival.
In addition, the Medienwerkstatt is hosting a one-day micro-game jam/workshop on this year’s “Briefs” theme, “Lovers.”
The Medienwerkstatt Wien was founded in 1978 as a non-commercial video studio. Through the implementation of several participatory media projects, it became Austria’s most important center for independent media production in the early 1980s. It is thus one of the longest-running models of its kind, which—run as an artists’ collective—has reflected, communicated, and helped shape the ongoing development of media art in both technological and theoretical spheres.
