Andreas Fogarasi: Branding the Public (Austria) – raising flags

11.5.–10.6.2026

Andreas Fogarasi

museum in progress presents the installation Branding the Public (Austria) by Andreas Fogarasi on the Stubenbrücke as the 39th contribution to raising flags. Fogarasi features four well-known Austrian visual symbols which represent the visual identity of state and state-affiliated institutions during the respective period and are deeply embedded in the collective memory:

AUA (1972–2003)
ORF (1968–2002)
ÖBB (1974–2004)
Made in Austria (1978–2004)

By removing these signs from their original functional contexts and transferring them onto the form of the flag, Fogarasi transforms them into emblematic signs of national self-representation.

raising flags is a long-term project by museum in progress, curated by Alois Herrmann and Kaspar Mühlemann Hartl, which has been realised at various locations, in virtual exhibition spaces online and in the media spaces of newspapers and magazines since 2023.

museum in progress is a non-profit art initiative founded in 1990. Its exhibition activity concentrates on contemporary art in media, public and virtual spaces like newspapers, magazines, billboards, building fronts, flag poles, television, concert halls and the Internet. The context-dependent and temporary art projects of this immaterial museum aim at the interface between art and everyday life. It therefore has an inherent social dimension, with a particular commitment to the diversity and freedom of contemporary art production, while at the same time fostering public social discourse.
