artists from all over the world

Spiral binding is one of the most unassuming choices in book production. In art, this simple form of binding becomes an aesthetic and structural device. It allows the pages to lie completely flat, alters the relationship between front and back, and makes the technical connection between the sheets visible. The book appears not as a closed block, but as a flexible system of individual sheets, sequences, and transitions.

The exhibition Spiralbindung at the S.F.K.B. Archive explores this technique as an artistic, publishing, and material choice. It presents publications in which this binding is not merely a means of production, but also helps determine the book’s form, use, and perception. As part of the Independent Space Index 2026, the publishing space becomes a place where modes of production, object form, and artistic thinking enter into a visible relationship.
