Romuald Hazoumè: ALTER ECO

9.4.–13.6.2026

Romuald Hazoumè

museum in progress presents four flags by Romuald Hazoumè on Aspernbrücke, featuring symbols based on Fâ – a centuries-old system of knowledge and divination from the Yoruba-speaking cultures of West Africa, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage. They function as a precious instrument for navigating life, grounded in a cosmic order and a metaphysics of natural forces and ancestral knowledge. These potent signs unfold their universal relevance in a desire for reflection and orientation for our community. Their spiritual and epistemic dimension gives these flags a significance that extends far beyond its original environment, transforming them into a globally resonant practice of experience and thought.
ALTER ECO is a project by museum in progress, realised in cooperation with the Klima Biennale Wien. Curated by Alois Herrmann and Kaspar Mühlemann Hartl and supported by the Art Section of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport (BMWKMS). Courtesy: October Gallery.

museum in progress is a non-profit art initiative founded in 1990. Its exhibition activity concentrates on contemporary art in media, public and virtual spaces like newspapers, magazines, billboards, building fronts, flag poles, television, concert halls and the Internet. The context-dependent and temporary art projects of this immaterial museum aim at the interface between art and everyday life. It therefore has an inherent social dimension, with a particular commitment to the diversity and freedom of contemporary art production, while at the same time fostering public social discourse.
